What is the same, what changes
All these classes end with a meal of what you cooked, and you leave with the recipes. For the typical run of a class, the dishes and the established schools, see our guide cooking classes in Marrakech. What changes between offers is the market (included or not), the place (medina riad or mountain village), the group size and the transfer.
KECHCOOK: best rated, a bit short at the market
This class was seen at $42 ($52 on another display). It lasts 4 hours, with the meal, bread, water and tea, an apron and hotel pickup. Recipes are sent afterwards, classes are given in English and French, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Rated 5.0 from 1,869 reviews. The only reservation noted: some find the market stop too quick.
Flavors of Marrakech: for the market
This offer costs $62 to $75 depending on the display, for 4 hours. The market is included only in the morning session, which starts around 10:30; the evening session is around 5:30 pm. The meal, ingredients and round-trip transport are included. It is the one to choose if shopping with a guide is part of what you want.
Intrepid Urban Adventures: tagine and souk
This class starts at $55 and shows 4.8 from 434 reviews. It lasts 4 hours: guided souk visit, cooking a tagine in a traditional riad, a meal, with hotel pickup and drop-off. A good choice if you want to understand what you are buying before you cook.
Berber family in the Atlas: a whole day
This day lasts 7 hours and costs $52 to $61, for about 4.8 from 400 reviews depending on the page. You learn a dish from a local grandmother, then have a three-course lunch. Travellers like the welcome and the setting; two limits: one review regrets there is no market, another a long wait before cooking started. Plan the whole day, travel included; see also Imlil and Toubkal for the area.
Ateliers d'Ailleurs: the private option
This offer is a private class with market shopping, followed by a meal in a riad. It was seen at about $75 ($81 on the provider's page) and rated 4.8, but on only 15 reviews. The duration varies by source (4 or 5 hours) and one traveller found the whole thing shorter, about 3 to 3.5 hours. A few criticisms: little exchange with the instructor at the market, and a workshop where not everyone gets hands-on.
What is not included, and the pitfalls
- Real duration: several reviews note sessions shorter than advertised. Ask for the end time.
- Market: included or not, sometimes only in the morning; check the listing.
- Transfer: some classes include pickup, others charge extra if you stay far from the medina.
- "Private": often a private group, not a riad reserved for you. Confirm whether the meal is on the roof or in the courtyard.
- Diets: vegetarian, gluten-free or halal are often possible; say so when booking.
- Extras: the typical menu is described in what to eat in Marrakech, and a market can also be visited alone, see Spice Square.
Which offer should you choose?
- First time, safe choice: KECHCOOK.
- Market and shopping: Flavors of Marrakech (morning session) or Intrepid for the guided souk.
- Family: the day with the Berber family, but long for little ones.
- Couple or small private group: Ateliers d'Ailleurs, keeping in mind the few reviews.
- Budget: KECHCOOK, the best score for the price in the set.
- Vegetarian: ask for the menu in advance at any school.
Booking at the best time
Book a few days ahead in high season (spring, autumn). Choose the morning session if you want the market, the evening if you prefer a dinner and less heat. For the rest of the city, see also the page on Moroccan breakfast and msemen.
