What we found
| Place | What it is | What is confirmed | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small animal park in Marrakech | lions, monkeys, flamingos according to guides | fare of 70 MAD (adult) and 50 MAD (child) quoted in Moroccan press, undated | hours, current fare, living conditions of the animals |
| National Zoological Park of Rabat | about 2,000 animals, opened January 2012 | quoted fare 120 MAD (adult) and 80 MAD (child), by reservation, undated | about 3 h 30 from Marrakech: only if you are going to Rabat |
| Agafay | stone desert 40 minutes from the city | no entry fee to walk around; camel rides from 45 EUR for half a day with one operator | choose an operator that treats its animals well |
We found no clear official page for a zoo at Agafay: do not rely on a zoo address without published hours.
Ethics
Before paying to see animals, look at the enclosures, water, shade and space. Avoid any place that lets you touch, carry or pose with wild animals; in Marrakech also avoid snake charmers and chained monkeys on Jemaa el-Fna square. For camel rides, choose an operator that limits loads and working hours.
Alternatives with children
- Anima Garden, in the Ourika Valley, about 27 to 28 km from Marrakech: a three-hectare art and nature garden, not a zoo. The official site lists 9 am to 6 pm all year; a guide quotes 140 MAD for adults and free entry for under-12s. A free shuttle links the medina, by reservation. See our guide to the Ourika Valley excursion.
- Agafay desert at sunset: see Agafay at sunset, which offer. To see camels in a supervised setting, this sunset camel ride with dinner under the stars is the offer we pick.
- Marrakech with children: all our ideas are in Marrakech with children.
Tips
- Phone or check a map listing the day before.
- Avoid the midday heat from April to September.
- Bring water and a hat.
