Safety, weather and earthquake
- Gatherings: avoid Jemaa el-Fna square and main avenues during any unnotified gathering, and follow the instructions of the security forces.
- Weather: in winter, cold nights, rain and snow on the High Atlas; excursions to the Ourika, Ouarzazate or the passes may be postponed.
- Earthquake: the country is seismic; local instructions apply.
- Everyday safety: see our guide on safety in Marrakech.
What to do: refunds, insurance, alternatives
- On a gathering or rainy day: gardens close in bad weather; a museum, such as the Majorelle Garden and the Berber Museum, can be booked with free cancellation.
- Excursions: book with flexible cancellation, since Atlas passes are sometimes closed by snow.
- Ramadan: plan meals ahead and respect local customs in public.
Keep your tickets, receipts and a screenshot of the announcement. For a flight, the airline must offer a refund or rerouting; the fixed compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004 depends on the cause of the disruption and only applies to flights leaving the EU, or arriving in the EU with a European airline. Before booking anything non-refundable (hotel, train, excursion), read the cancellation terms.
What if you fall ill or get hurt during the trip? A disruption does not help when there is an accident. SafetyWing (bought online, for the length of the trip) covers medical costs and evacuation; it is not cancellation insurance, so read its trip-interruption terms before counting on it for a strike or a missed flight. See our travel insurance guide.

What to do safely during protests
Here is a plan B if a rally or day of protest affects the city.
- Avoid on protest days: the main squares and avenues of big cities on protest days, including Jemaa el-Fna in Marrakech.
- A low-risk outing: 3 valleys Atlas day trip, away from the city and its squares.
- A low-risk outing: Agafay desert by quad or camel, 40 minutes from the city, outside the rally areas.
- Hotel with free cancellation: See hotels in la Palmeraie (free cancellation), away from the centre, refundable if plans change.
