Gueliz Central Market: flowers, fish and fresh produce

Updated on October 1, 2026

The Gueliz central market is the neighbourhood market of Marrakech's new town, on Rue Ibn Toumert, about 200 m east of Place du 16-Novembre. Gueliz residents come here for fresh produce: fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and cut flowers. It took over from the district's historic market, built under the protectorate on Avenue Mohammed V, demolished in 2005 and replaced by the Carré Eden shopping centre, which opened in 2014. Quieter than the souks of the medina, it gives a glimpse of everyday life in Marrakech away from the tourist circuits.

The market is a few minutes' walk from Place du 16-Novembre, the main post office and the Marrakech Plaza shopping centre. Florists, butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers have their stalls side by side. People come here for the day's produce, not for handicrafts.

The old central market occupied the block between Avenue Mohammed V, Rue de la Liberté, Rue Souriya and Rue Tariq Ibn Ziyad. Its demolition in 2005 caused fierce controversy in Marrakech. The Carré Eden shopping centre that replaced it is about 500 m west of the current market.

Tips

Come in the morning to see the best-stocked stalls, especially at the fishmongers and florists. Prices are those of a neighbourhood market: ask before buying and bring small notes in dirhams. Always ask permission before photographing a trader or their stall. The local development company Marrakech Mobility has launched a project for a new building to rehouse the Gueliz central market, with 132 shops planned on the ground floor. No works schedule had been published when we checked in October 2026: once construction starts, the stalls may be moved, so check locally before you go.

How to get there

Rue Ibn Toumert, Gueliz, about 200 m east of Place du 16-Novembre, not far from the main post office. On foot: allow about 20 minutes from the Koutoubia, walking up Avenue Mohammed V. Taxi: ask for "le marché central de Guéliz"; a petit taxi from the medina takes about ten minutes outside rush hour.
