The rule in short
- Zero tolerance for travellers: possession, use and carrying of narcotics are offences, whatever the quantity.
- The cannabis reform does not concern you: since 2021 Morocco has legalised growing cannabis for medical, pharmaceutical and industrial uses in a few provinces. This does not allow recreational use or buying in the street.
- No exception for "small amounts": a little resin in a bag is enough to be arrested.
Offers in the medina

In the medina, around Jemaa el-Fna square and in the souks, someone may whisper "hashish, kif?" The right answer is to refuse politely and keep walking. The risks:
- Scam: cut or fake product, or an inflated price.
- Trap: the middleman may be working with an accomplice, or even the police.
- Arrest: the buyer is the one who risks prison.

Food and cakes
Beware of "cakes", "majoun" or drinks made with cannabis offered in some places: they are narcotics too.
Medicines
Personal medical treatment is allowed: keep it in its original packaging with the prescription (ideally translated into French or English) and bring only the quantity you need. Medicines containing psychotropics or opiates (anxiety drugs, some painkillers) call for extra care: check their status with your embassy before leaving. See also health in Marrakech.
What to do if there is a problem
If you are arrested, ask to contact your consulate or embassy and a lawyer, and do not sign any document you do not understand (reports are often in Arabic).
