The three cheapest options

Patio of a riad in the Marrakech medina

The youth hostel is the cheapest option: a dorm bed, or a simple private room, with a kitchen or breakfast depending on the address. Several occupy former riads in the medina, with a patio and a terrace: the mood is social, ideal for solo travellers. A dorm bed in a well-known medina hostel starts around €19 to €25 a night in low season; it rises sharply in high season, at weekends and during big events.

The small riad or simple guesthouse costs more than a dorm but, for two people, a double room often works out at a price comparable to two hostel beds, with a patio, breakfast served and a personal welcome. It is the best value for a couple or two friends who prefer a room of their own. See also the budget for a stay in Marrakech.

The budget hotel in Gueliz suits you if you prefer a classic hotel: a larger room, a lift, air conditioning, sometimes breakfast extra. It is less atmospheric than the medina but easier to reach for taxis and stations.

Which areas are cheapest

South and east of the medina

Around the Kasbah, the Mellah and the lanes near the Bahia Palace, prices are generally gentler than in the streets near Jemaa el-Fna square. The southern monuments are a few steps away, and the square is about a quarter of an hour on foot. A very good area on a small budget.

North of the medina

Towards Bab Taghzout and the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the medina is more residential, riads are often cheaper and the stay is calmer. Allow a quarter of an hour or more on foot to Jemaa el-Fna, and expect harder orientation at night. Our guide to the north of the medina covers the area.

Around Jemaa el-Fna

Jemaa el-Fna square is very handy for arrival and first outings, but rooms in nearby streets cost more and the noise lasts late. A riad a few minutes away, in a dead-end alley, is often a better compromise.

Gueliz

Marrakech railway station

Gueliz has budget hotels and apartments, near the railway station and the bus stations. It is the logical choice if you arrive late by train or bus, travel by car or leave early. The medina is ten minutes away by taxi or half an hour on foot.

Quick comparison

Option Strengths Limits Best for
Hostel (medina) Lowest price, meeting people, terrace Noisy dorms, little privacy Solo traveller, backpacker
Small riad or guesthouse Patio, breakfast, welcome Steep stairs, dark rooms Couple, two friends
Budget hotel in Gueliz Taxi at the door, lift, air conditioning Less atmosphere, medina at a distance Late arrival, car

Arriving without mishap

From the station or airport, the simplest approach is to ask your accommodation if it offers a transfer, and at what price. No taxi enters the medina's lanes: you will be dropped at a gate or a car park, and a member of staff can then come to meet you. Do not follow young men who offer to guide you to your address; they will ask for money. Our guides train and bus from Marrakech and Marrakech-Menara airport to the centre detail the journeys.

What to check before booking

  • Fees on top of the displayed price: the tourist tax is due per person per night and is not always included in platform prices. Many establishments collect it in cash on arrival or departure.
  • Breakfast and air conditioning: included breakfast saves a meal; from December to February nights are cool and a poorly heated riad is freezing, while in summer air conditioning is essential.
  • Recent reviews about access: read comments describing the route from the taxi, the lighting of the lanes at night and the real walking distance.
  • Free cancellation: book with cancellation possible until your transport is confirmed.
  • Payment outside the platform: refuse to pay by bank transfer at the request of an "owner" who contacts you outside the booking site; it is a classic scam, like the other traps described in our scams to avoid in Marrakech.

Saving on the rest of the stay

Sleeping cheaply leaves room for the rest. The riad breakfast, meals at the medina's snack stalls and stands, free activities and petit taxis shared among several people cut the bill. To buy souvenirs without overspending, stop by the Souk Cherifia, where the designer boutiques often display their prices, before diving into the haggling of the big souks.
