The best-seller: beginner lesson with lunch and transfer

This format is Taghazout's favourite: 4.8 from 347 reviews. The instructor meets you (or picks you up at your hotel), chooses the spot according to the day's swell, teaches you to paddle, pop up and read a wave, then you have lunch. Reviews mention patient instructors; one notes that the waves were strong that day. If you sleep in Agadir, the small-group version from Agadir is an option (details: see the listing).

Group lesson, private lesson or camp?

  • Group: the cheapest, 5 to 8 students depending on the offer. Good for trying it out.
  • Private: one instructor for you or your family, useful for children and for fast progress. Taghazout listings include 2-hour private lessons; compare on screen, we did not find a reliable price.
  • 5-day camp: the best choice if you stay a week. The camp with accommodation mixes lessons and excursions (about $586 per person). The camp listing shows a duration of "1 day": check the programme before booking.

Levels and spots

Beginners surf on sandy beaches or soft waves; rocky points such as Anchor Point or Hash Point need a good level. The instructor picks the spot on the day. If you have never surfed, do not book an "intermediate" lesson. You must be able to swim.

When to go

You can surf all year. From autumn to spring the Atlantic swell is more regular and stronger, which suits experienced surfers; in summer the waves are often smaller, an advantage for learning. The water stays cool: schools provide a wetsuit.

Gear and what is included

Board and wetsuit are usually provided; confirm this on the listing, along with lunch, photos and insurance. Bring swimwear, sunscreen (ideally mineral), a towel and a change of clothes.

From Marrakech

Taghazout is about 250 km from Marrakech, 3.5 to 4 hours by road: a day-trip lesson is not realistic. Plan at least one night there. The journey and schedules are covered in Marrakech to Agadir by bus or transfer and Taghazout and Paradise Valley from Marrakech. To sleep on the Agadir side: where to stay in Agadir; for the rest of the city: Agadir from Marrakech.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Currents and waves: follow the instructor's rules and never go into the water alone.
  • Real duration: a 2-hour session includes the trip to the spot and the warm-up. Ask how long you spend in the water.
  • Group size: a maximum (5, 6 or 8) is announced; it changes the experience a lot.
  • Tipping: customary for the instructor, see money and tipping.

Which option to choose?

  • One session, no car: beginner lesson with lunch and transfer.
  • You stay in Agadir: small-group lesson from Agadir.
  • A week: camp with accommodation.
  • No surf but wind: Essaouira, kitesurfing and activities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to swim to take a surf lesson? Yes, schools require it.

Is one lesson enough to stand up? Many beginners manage it in one session on soft waves, but allow 3 to 5 sessions to feel comfortable.

Can I book on the same day? Often yes outside high season; during school holidays, book ahead. Free cancellation depends on the offer.

What is the minimum age? It varies by offer; private lessons suit children better.
