When to go: the wind season

According to the specialist guides we consulted, the season runs from April to October, with the steadiest trade wind from June to September, often 20 knots or more in July and August, with gusts sometimes above 30 knots. The wind usually picks up in late morning and strengthens in the afternoon, so beginners prefer the early hours. Outside the season the wind is less reliable, and the Atlantic stays cool all year, hence the full wetsuit in winter. Check the forecast the day before and keep a spare day if you are coming specifically for the sport.

Spots by level

  • Essaouira bay: a wide beach in front of the town, well suited to beginners and lessons, especially in the morning in summer. The wind is steady and there is room; watch for currents and for swimmers near the town.
  • Sidi Kaouki, about 25 km to the south: an exposed beach with waves, known for surfing and wave kiting, better for intermediate or advanced riders. See our guide to Sidi Kaouki from Marrakech.
  • Moulay Bouzerktoun, about 25 km to the north: a fishing village turned windsurf and kitesurf spot, known for strong, regular wind. Reserved for independent riders.

Schools and lessons

Several schools work in Essaouira, some affiliated with the IKO (the international instructor certification body), especially around the bay. Check before paying:

  • that the instructor is certified and speaks your language;
  • that the price includes kite, board, harness, helmet, life jacket and insurance;
  • the student-to-instructor ratio and radio communication with the student;
  • the cancellation policy if the wind is too light.
Option Indicative price (October 2026) Good to know
Group kitesurf lesson, 2 h About €55 to €80 per person Maximum 3 to 4 students per group
Private lesson, 2 h About €100 to €150 Faster progress
Equipment rental About €35 per hour For independent riders only

These amounts come from schools and booking platforms, not an official price list, and vary with the season. Expect several sessions before you stand on the board: the first day is mostly about mastering the kite. Book directly with a school, preferably by email or phone with written confirmation.

Windsurfing, surfing and other activities

Windsurfing is done on the same water as kitesurfing, with schools renting equipment. Surfing is concentrated at Sidi Kaouki and the beaches south of Essaouira. Away from the wind, the town also offers horse rides on the beach, quad biking and boat trips: for riding and animal activities, choose a centre that looks after its animals. Non-participants will find plenty to fill the day in the medina and at the port, described in our Essaouira page.

From Marrakech: organising the day

Essaouira is about 180 km from Marrakech, around three hours by road. To kitesurf, it is better to spend at least one night there than to do a day trip: the best wind is in the afternoon. Buses and shared taxis are covered in our article on trains and buses from Marrakech; for an organised trip without the sport, see Essaouira from Marrakech: which excursion. With a rental car, read driving in Marrakech first and plan the return before dark.

Practical tips

  • Protect yourself from sun and wind: sunscreen, glasses with a strap, covering clothes.
  • Never go out to sea alone; respect flags and your school's instructions.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers water sports.
  • For the rest of your trip, compare other excursions from Marrakech.
