On the square itself

Jemaa el-Fna square by day

Jemaa el-Fna square is being redeveloped: a few areas may be under works. On the south side, the Museum of Intangible Heritage explains the history of the square and the halqas. The café terraces along its edge (Café de France, Grand Balcon du Café Glacier) give the best view of the comings and goings, if you order a drink.

North: the souks

North of the square is the entrance to the souks of Marrakech. The covered lanes are divided into areas by trade. Two stops are a few minutes away: the Spice Square (Rahba Kedima), where spices, baskets and dyes are sold, and Souk Cherifia, a covered passage of craft and fashion shops. The Mouassine Museum is in the neighbouring district. To buy without being caught out, read our advice on buying a rug in Marrakech.

West: the Koutoubia, about 5 minutes

Jemaa el-Fna at sunset

To the west, the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque can be seen from the square and reached in about five minutes on foot. The paths of the Koutoubia Gardens let you sit in the shade. A second guide, around the Koutoubia, continues this walk.

South: Riad Zitoun

To the south-east, Riad Zitoun street leads towards the southern medina, its palaces and the Mellah. It is the street of cafés and shops that opens onto the square: on foot, it is above all the link to the Kasbah and Mellah walk.

What you can see in one hour

  1. A tour of the square and the Museum of Intangible Heritage: 30 minutes.
  2. A foray into the souks as far as Rahba Kedima: 20 minutes.
  3. A drink on a terrace at the end of the afternoon: 20 minutes.

Practical tips

  • Touts: "guides" approach you on the square to take you to the souks or the tanneries. A polite refusal is enough. Our guide to scams to avoid in Marrakech describes the scenarios.
  • Crowds: in the evening, keep your phone and wallet in a zipped pocket.
  • Finding your way: the square is a landmark, and so is the Koutoubia minaret; if in doubt, ask a shopkeeper for directions rather than an insistent passer-by.
  • Eating: see our guide on where to eat near Jemaa el-Fna.
