The three operators: Maroc Telecom, Orange, inwi

Hall of Terminal 1 at Marrakech-Ménara airport

  • Maroc Telecom (the "Jawwal" brand for prepaid), Orange Maroc and inwi cover the city of Marrakech and its main roads without difficulty.
  • Coverage differs in the Atlas and the desert, where the signal depends on the village. If you head into the High Atlas or the desert, look at each operator's coverage maps and ask your host which one works in the village where you will sleep.
  • Offers for tourists are prepaid cards with a data allowance (sometimes with calls and texts) and a validity period: compare the total price, the volume in GB, the duration and what happens when the allowance runs out.

Buying a SIM card at the airport or in town

Operator counters are located in the arrivals hall at Marrakech-Ménara airport; their hours generally follow flight arrivals and may change, and airport prices may be higher than in town (sources: travel news sites consulted on 7 October 2026). In every case, you must show your original passport: identifying the subscriber is compulsory. The seller installs the card and activates the plan; check that the connection works before leaving the counter. In town, Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi branches, notably in Guéliz, sell the same cards; the medina also has many small top-up shops. Use an official point of sale, not a street seller.

Your phone must be unlocked. If your device has a single SIM slot, the Moroccan card temporarily replaces yours: keep yours safe, as many banks send payment codes by text message.

Travel eSIMs

A travel eSIM is installed by QR code before you leave: no queue on arrival and no passport to show at a counter. It requires an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone. It is most often "data only": no Moroccan number for calls, but WhatsApp and maps work. Prices per GB are generally higher than with a local card. Check that the offer covers Morocco (and not a partial "North Africa" zone) and which operators it relies on.

Roaming: check the rate before you leave

Morocco is not part of the European Union: the EU's "roam like at home" rule does not apply there, unless your operator has a specific offer. Ask it for the price of calls and data in Morocco, or for an "international" plan; otherwise, turn off data roaming and use Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi in Marrakech

Most riads, hotels and cafés offer Wi-Fi, with variable quality inside the thick walls of a medina house. Plan a mobile solution for the offline map, the taxi and calls, especially to find your riad at the end of a derb (scams to avoid). On public Wi-Fi, avoid banking transactions.
