How to choose your valley

How much time do you want to spend on the road? The Ourika, Lake Lalla Takerkoust and Imlil are under an hour and a half away; Telouet and Ouzoud take around three hours each way. Do you want to walk? Imlil and Setti Fatma are best explored on foot, while Telouet and the lake need no effort at all. And what time of year are you going? In winter, snow can close the passes and cover the slopes of Oukaïmeden; in summer, the altitude brings cooler air, but afternoon storms can swell the rivers very quickly.

This guide sticks to day trips. For the Sahara dunes, allow at least three days: our guide to the desert from Marrakech covers that tour in detail.

The Ourika Valley: the easiest to arrange

The road to Setti Fatma along the river in the Ourika Valley

The Ourika Valley runs south-east along a river lined with orchards and mud-brick villages. The road passes through Tnine Ourika, whose market is held on Monday mornings, and ends at Setti Fatma, about 1 hr 30 min from Marrakech. From there, a path climbs alongside a stream that drops in seven stepped waterfalls: the first is about a thirty-minute walk away, with a few stretches over rocks, while the higher ones call for sturdy shoes.

It is the easiest trip to do by shared transport: grand taxis usually charge 30 to 50 MAD a seat to Setti Fatma, and group tours from the hotels cost 200 to 400 MAD per person, transport included. The downside: the valley gets very busy at weekends and in summer. Go on a weekday if you can.

Nectarome and the gardens on the Ourika road

Before the climb, the Ourika road has two gardens that make a good break in the journey. The Nectarome bio-aromatic garden, in Tnine Ourika, about thirty kilometres from Marrakech, grows aromatic and medicinal plants; a small distillery produces essential oils a few times a year, and the site has a cosmetics shop, meals and workshops on reservation. It opens from 9 am to 5 pm from October to May and from 9 am to 7 pm in June, July and September; it closes for the whole of August. On the same road, Anima Garden mixes plants and works of art.

Asni, Imlil and Aroumd: hiking at the foot of Toubkal

Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak of the High Atlas, above the valleys

The road south passes through Asni, a farming town whose Saturday market draws people from the surrounding villages, then climbs to Imlil, at 1,740 m and about 1 hr 30 min away. The village is the gateway to Toubkal National Park. On a day trip, the classic goal is Aroumd (Aremd), a terraced village above Imlil, reached by a path through walnut and apple trees and stone houses.

The summit of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest in North Africa, cannot be done in a day: the ascent takes two days with a night in a refuge, and a licensed guide has been compulsory since late 2018, even to go up as far as Sidi Chamharouch. Everything is explained on our Imlil and Toubkal page. A mountain guide generally costs 500 to 1,000 MAD a day.

The Al Haouz region, which includes Asni, Imlil and Amizmiz, was badly hit by the earthquake of 8 September 2023. Before setting off, ask your accommodation or your guide about the condition of the trails and villages you plan to pass through.

Oukaïmeden: high mountains you can reach by car

About 75 km from Marrakech, Oukaïmeden is a ski resort set at around 2,600 m, the highest in Africa. It is reached by a winding road that leaves the Ourika Valley. From December to March, people ski there when there is enough snow: the snow is natural and varies a great deal from one year to the next, and the lifts are out of service during the upgrade works relaunched in 2026, so skiers climb on foot. The rest of the year, the plateau is good for walking, among pastures, shepherds' huts and rocks carved with Bronze Age engravings near the entrance to the resort.

It is the coolest trip in summer and the only one that offers real high-altitude scenery without a hike. On the other hand, there is almost no shared transport: plan on a private driver, a car or an organised tour.

Lalla Takerkoust and Amizmiz: the lake and the western markets

To the south-west, around forty kilometres or about 45 minutes away, Lake Lalla Takerkoust is a reservoir created in the 1930s by a dam on the N'Fis river. Its shores have restaurants, water sports and camel rides, with the Atlas peaks as a backdrop. The lake combines easily with the nearby Agafay Desert.

Further on into the foothills, the road leads to Amizmiz, about sixty kilometres from Marrakech, whose big market is held on Tuesdays. It is the least touristy option in this guide: no sights as such, but a rural market where people come to sell farm produce, livestock and everyday goods.

The Tizi n'Tichka and Telouet Kasbah

The ruins of Telouet Kasbah in the heart of the High Atlas

The N9 highway to Ouarzazate crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 m. Just past the pass, a narrow side road leads to the village of Telouet and Telouet Kasbah, the palace of the El Glaoui family, who controlled this caravan route in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th. Behind partly collapsed earthen walls, several reception rooms have kept their painted wooden ceilings, zellige tilework and carved stucco. A modest entry fee is paid in cash on site.

Allow about three hours' drive each way, on a winding mountain road. If you also want to see Aït-Ben-Haddou, further on, the round trip takes more than twelve hours: you are better off staying the night there or in Ouarzazate.

Beyond the High Atlas: the Ouzoud Falls

The Ouzoud Falls are not in the High Atlas but at the foot of the Middle Atlas, in Azilal province, about 150 km north-east of Marrakech, or 2 hr 30 min to 3 hr by road. The water drops about 110 m in three falls into a red-rock gorge. Access to the site is free; paths lead down to the pool, small boats take you close to the falls for around twenty dirhams, and macaques live in the olive trees.

How to get there

By shared grand taxi

Grand taxis leave once they are full, with six passengers. For Asni and Imlil, they leave from the rank near Bab er-Robb, in the south-west of the medina; you often need to change taxis in Asni to go up to Imlil. It is a cheap way to reach the Ourika and Imlil, but leave plenty of time for the return: departures thin out in the late afternoon. You can also hire the whole taxi for the day, agreeing the price and route before you set off.

Private driver or group tour

A driver for the day, booked through your accommodation or an agency, is the most flexible option for Oukaïmeden, Telouet or a day combining several stops. Group tours with hotel pick-up are the cheapest way to see Ouzoud, the Ourika and Imlil, at the cost of a fixed schedule and frequent shopping stops (argan cooperatives, shops). Check what is included before booking: guide, lunch, entry fees. Our comparison of day trips from Marrakech goes through the options.

By hire car

A car lets you leave early and stop wherever you like. Mountain roads are narrow and winding, shared with lorries, pedestrians and flocks of sheep; avoid driving at night. Our guide to car hire in Marrakech covers prices, insurance and driving rules.

Season and mountain safety

  • Storms and flash floods: in summer and early autumn, storms often break in the mountains in the afternoon. A river can rise within minutes, even if it is not raining where you are; the Ourika Valley suffered a deadly flood in August 1995. Do not settle down in a riverbed, and move away from the water as soon as the sky clouds over.
  • Snow and passes: from December to March, snow can close the Tizi n'Tichka or the Oukaïmeden road for a few hours or a few days. Check the day before with your driver or your accommodation.
  • Cold and altitude: it is much cooler in Imlil or Oukaïmeden than in Marrakech, especially in the morning and evening. Bring a warm jacket, even in spring, along with water and sun protection: the sun is strong at altitude.
  • Walking: good shoes are essential on the slippery rocks of Setti Fatma and the paths around Imlil.
  • Prices: agree the price of a guide, taxi or mule before setting off. Our advice on scams to avoid in Marrakech applies in the mountains too.
