Sidi Kaouki: Beach and Surf near Essaouira, from Marrakech

Updated on October 8, 2026

Sidi Kaouki is a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast, about twenty kilometres south of Essaouira and 175 km from Marrakech. Its long sandy beach, swept by the trade winds, makes it a well-known spot for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, with schools for beginners. The village is overlooked by the marabout of the saint Sidi Kaouki, who gave it its name. The mood is calm, far from mass tourism: people come for a beach day, a horse or camel ride, a fish lunch, or to sleep facing the ocean. Practical info

Tips

The wind blows all year: bring a jacket, even in summer, and sunscreen. Surf and kite schools rent equipment and give lessons; ask for prices on site, as they vary by season and level. Horse or camel rides should be negotiated before getting on. The village is small: bring cash, as cash machines are rare.

How to get there

About 175 km from Marrakech, or 2.5 to 3 hours by road, via the Essaouira road and then south. Without a car, take a bus or shared taxi to Essaouira, then a taxi for the remaining stretch. A car with driver lets you combine Sidi Kaouki and Essaouira in one day, but it makes for a long day.

Opening hours

Best: Surf from September to April
Beach and village open access all year; schools, restaurants and activities open according to the season, generally from mid-morning to sunset
