The eleven day trips at a glance
The table lists destinations from nearest to farthest. The group price is per person, in a shared minibus with hotel pick-up; the private price is per vehicle with driver, whatever the number of passengers (up to 3 or 4 in a saloon car). "From" prices are those of the cheapest agencies; platforms and hotels often sell the same trips for more.

Nearby trips: under 2 hours by road

These are the most relaxing trips: little driving, plenty of time on site, back in town by late afternoon.
Ourika Valley, Imlil and Oukaimeden
The Ourika Valley is the simplest mountain trip: the road follows a river lined with orchards up to Setti Fatma, where a path leads to the first waterfalls in about thirty minutes. You can even go by shared grand taxi, for MAD 30 to 50 a seat. On summer weekends the valley is very busy.
Imlil and Toubkal suit walkers better. Imlil, at 1,740 m, is the starting point for hikes of a few hours between terraced villages; climbing Toubkal itself takes two days and a mandatory licensed guide. For a single day, a three- to five-hour loop with a local guide is enough.
Oukaimeden, at 2,600 m, is one of the highest ski resorts in Africa, with about twenty runs. The season normally runs from December to March, but snowfall has become irregular: check that the lifts are open before you go. Out of season, the plateau makes a cool summer walk, and its rock engravings, some of them visible near the resort entrance, will interest the curious. So-called "three valleys" tours often combine Ourika, Oukaimeden and the Asni valley.
Our guide High Atlas from Marrakech compares them in detail, valley by valley.
Agafay and Lalla Takerkoust lake
The Agafay Desert is not a desert of dunes but a stony plateau, 40 km south-west of the city. People go mostly in the afternoon, for a camel or quad ride, the sunset and dinner in a camp. Close by, Lalla Takerkoust lake, the reservoir of a dam on the Nfis river, offers kayaks, pedal boats and Atlas views; its level drops markedly in dry years. The two combine easily in a single day. To compare motorised activities and rides, see our guide to quad, buggy and camel rides in Marrakech.
Essaouira and Ouzoud: 2 h 30 to 3 h by road
Essaouira

Essaouira offers the biggest change of scene: a UNESCO-listed fortified medina, a fishing port and the ocean. It suits almost every traveller and works all year round; in summer it stays cool while Marrakech tops 40 °C, but the wind blows hard. It is also the easiest trip by public transport: Supratours buses, leaving near the railway station, run several times a day, and CTM also serves the route. Allow about 3 hours and MAD 100 to 140 one way. Take a morning bus and book your return in advance, especially at weekends.
Ouzoud Falls

The Ouzoud Falls drop 110 m into a red gorge, about 150 km north-east of Marrakech. You explore the site on foot by steps and paths, with boats at the foot of the falls and macaques in the olive trees: bring good shoes and allow 3 to 4 hours on site. Spring brings the strongest flow. By public transport you need a coach to Azilal and then a grand taxi: possible, but long for a single day.
Beyond the Tichka: Telouet, Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate
These three destinations lie on the other side of the High Atlas, via the N9 and the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m). The mountain road is winding and snow can close it for a few hours in winter.
- Telouet Kasbah, the former palace of the El Glaoui family, keeps salons with painted ceilings and zellige tilework. Damaged by the September 2023 earthquake, it has reopened some of its rooms after consolidation work; entry costs about MAD 50, guided tour included. It lies about 130 km from Marrakech, off the N9.
- The ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a World Heritage site since 1987, is one of the best-selling trips. Access is free. From Telouet, a road of about 47 km runs down the Ounila valley to the ksar: the finest way to combine the two, privately or in a rental car.
- Ouarzazate and the Atlas Studios add about thirty kilometres to the day. The studios, a few kilometres west of town, can only be visited with a guide, in under an hour, for MAD 80. Most shared tours to Ait Ben Haddou include this stop.
Expect a 10- to 12-hour day, including 7 to 8 hours of driving there and back. If you can, sleep in Ait Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate to see the ksar in the evening light.
Casablanca by train
The day in Casablanca is the only trip on this list that is easy without a car or an agency. ONCF Al Atlas trains link Marrakech station to Casa-Voyageurs in 2 h 40 to 3 h, with departures roughly every one to two hours during the day. In second class, the fare depends on when you buy: from about MAD 50 if you book early, around MAD 100 at the standard fare, more at the last minute.
In Casablanca, a petit taxi takes you to the Hassan II Mosque on the seafront. Non-Muslims can visit only with a guide, for MAD 140 per adult. From September to mid-March, tours run at 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 12 noon and 3 pm, with an extra 4 pm slot from mid-March to mid-September; on Fridays the 11 am and 12 noon slots are dropped, and the schedule is reduced during Ramadan. Aim for a late-morning tour, then the Ain Diab corniche or the Art Deco city centre, before a late-afternoon train back.
How to choose your day trip
Time on the road or time on site
The first criterion is the ratio of driving to visiting. Ourika, Imlil, Oukaimeden, Agafay and Takerkoust leave more time on site than in the vehicle. Essaouira and Ouzoud are balanced. Ait Ben Haddou, Telouet and Ouarzazate involve more driving than visiting: best for travellers who enjoy mountain scenery through the window, or turned into a two-day trip.
The Merzouga desert, on the other hand, is impossible in a day: the Erg Chebbi is about 560 km away, 9 to 10 hours' drive each way. Serious tours last at least three days; our guide desert from Marrakech: Merzouga, Zagora or Agafay compares the options. If you travel with children, favour the nearby trips and read our guide to family day trips from Marrakech.
Group tour, private driver, rental car or public transport
| Option | Advantages | Drawbacks | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group tour | Low price, hotel pick-up, nothing to organise | Minibus with up to 17 seats, fixed times, compulsory stops at partner shops or restaurants | Solo travellers or couples on a budget |
| Private driver | Free choice of times and stops, per-vehicle price that drops as passengers increase | More expensive for 1 or 2 people | Families, groups of 3 to 4, combinations such as Telouet and Ait Ben Haddou |
| Rental car | Total freedom, good value over several days | Winding mountain roads, tiring city driving, parking | Experienced drivers, stays of several days outside the city |
| Bus or train | Cheapest, comfortable | Few destinations served directly | Essaouira by bus, Casablanca by train |
Prices checked in October 2026: a private driver costs from about €60 for Agafay to €150 to €180 for Ouzoud, tolls and fuel included. To hire a vehicle, see our guide to renting a car in Marrakech; for timetables and stations, see our guide to trains and buses from Marrakech.
Booking without unpleasant surprises
Before paying, get written confirmation of what is included: pick-up, lunch, local guide, entry fees, activities. The cheapest tours often make up the difference on lunches at partner restaurants and stops at cooperatives. Pay a deposit at most, and be wary of trips sold in the street by touts. Our guide to scams to avoid in Marrakech explains these practices.
What to bring
- Cash in dirhams: lunch, local guides, boats, entry fees and tips are almost always paid in cash.
- Good shoes for the paths at Ouzoud, Setti Fatma or Imlil, often stony and slippery near the water.
- A jacket, even in summer: the air is cool at altitude, the wind blows in Essaouira and evenings are cold in Agafay.
- Sun protection, a hat and water: shade is rare on the Tichka roads and in the desert.
- Clothing that covers shoulders and knees for the Hassan II Mosque and the villages.
- Your passport for hikes towards Toubkal, where checkpoints verify identities.
