| Period | Swell trend | Preferred level | Surf clothing thickness to be discussed |
|---|---|---|---|
| December to February | More powerful and regular | Experienced; beginner supervised on adapted beach | 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm depending on the cold felt |
| March to April | Winter swells can continue | Intermediate surfers or beginners with guidance | 3/2 mm; thicker if necessary |
| May to August | Usually smaller | First discovery and learning | Surf clothing according to the water and wind of the day |
| September to November | Transition then resumption of swells | According to conditions on the day | 3/2 mm, to be adjusted with the school |
Winter: for waves, not for tropical swimming
Local schools consulted place the period of strongest swells around winter, with a wider window from October to April. A self-sufficient surfer can find the stay he is looking for, provided he knows how to select the spots. The name Anchor Point on a brochure does not mean that this wave will be suitable for your ability or that it will work throughout your week.
A beginner can also take a course in winter if the instructor finds a suitable beach and area. On the other hand, do not choose a package intended for experienced surfers to follow more experienced friends. Say exactly what you know how to do: standing up in whitewater, going on an unbroken wave, managing the direction or paddling back out are different situations.
Spring: a compromise that remains to be read every day
March and April can still see significant swells. Compare a school that divides students according to their level with an outing where the whole group must surf in the same place. If you start catching unbroken waves, the quality of the explanations about positioning and right of way matters more than a famous spot.
Wind conditions change the feeling in the water and on the beach. Bring a dry layer to put on between two trips and ask if the transport will take the group back to the accommodation or leave them there for a long time. A full day can be nice for practicing and resting; it does not equate to as many hours of individual lessons.
Summer: learn without waiting for a week of guaranteed waves
Swells are generally smaller from May to September according to the local operators consulted. It’s a logical path for a first experience or a family trip. An apparently gentle sea, however, retains its currents, tides and variations: let the instructor choose the area and do not transpose the conditions of a beach to the entire coast.
Accept that a small swell offers fewer possibilities to an already independent surfer. If you're traveling with different abilities, compare separate groups and programs rather than seeking a compromise that will frustrate everyone. Keep rest activities and a reasonable change policy for days when conditions do not match the stated objective.
Autumn: choose between transition and search for swell
September can prolong the summer atmosphere, while October and November further open up the period expected by experienced surfers. This remains a trend, not a guarantee of wave height. If you have fixed dates, give priority to the possibility of traveling to suitable beaches and to a good assessment of your level.
Crowds grow around popular periods and holidays. We have not verified a count allowing us to precisely classify the least busy months. To avoid relying on a single spot, ask about the area covered by the vehicle and the size of the group in the water. Being few in the minibus doesn't say everything about supervision on the beach.
Water and wetsuit: listen to your body's needs
The operators consulted give a winter reference range of approximately 17 to 19 °C in the area, with recommendations varying between 3/2 mm and 4/3 mm. These are equipment guidelines, not measurements to your date. The duration of the session, the wind and your sensitivity to the cold count: a good fit is better than a thickness chosen only from a table.
Confirm the availability of your size, the condition of the zip and equipment hire for the entire planned duration. Ask how exchanges are handled if the surf suit lets in too much water. In summer, don't assume a swimsuit is enough because the air is hot; the school must adapt the equipment to the day and the participant.
Book a course adapted to the season
The private lesson for families and groups at Taghazout is suitable for those who want supervision reserved for their friends and family. The listing announces 2 hours and equipment; confirm location, age restrictions and transfers. The beginner lesson with lunch and transfer from Agadir is a practical group alternative if you are staying in the city. Check the pick-up area and actual accompanied time in the water.
No consistent course range has been confirmed for your dates. Compare the same duration, the same number of participants and the same transfers. To choose the services, consult our comparison of surf lessons and surf holidays; this page focuses on the season. For a day without surfing, Paradise Valley can supplement the stay depending on local conditions.
Where to base yourself
Stay close to the school if you surf most days, or choose Agadir to alternate city and lessons with transfer. Compare districts of Agadir and plan the trip with Marrakech–Agadir by bus or transfer. Leave a time buffer between arrival and your first session, so as not to pay for a class that is difficult to join.
