Why go to Oualidia

The lagoon is separated from the ocean by a ridge of rocks that breaks the waves: the water is calm, so you can swim, kayak and farm oysters. The village is tiny, with a beach, a harbour, a few fish restaurants and hotels on the lagoon shore. It is a trip for relaxing, not for sightseeing: there is no monument to tick off. If you would rather visit a town, see Essaouira from Marrakech instead.

How to get there from Marrakech

  • By car: about three hours by road, via Safi and then the coast road. This is the best option for a day trip: see our page on car rental in Marrakech and keep some margin for the drive back after dark. You can compare car rentals before you go.
  • Private transfer or tour: a car with a driver can do the round trip in a day. We found no partner offer worth recommending for this route: compare several agencies and ask what is included (lunch, boat, time on site).
  • By public transport: there is no direct link from Marrakech to Oualidia. You have to take a bus or train to a coastal city (Safi, Essaouira or Casablanca depending on the timetable), then a local bus or taxi. Allow several extra hours: see our page train and bus from Marrakech for stations and companies, and check connections on the day.

One day or one night?

The drive is about six hours round trip. Leave early: you arrive in mid-morning for a boat ride, a relaxed lunch and a walk along the water, then leave in the middle of the afternoon. That is short. A night on the spot changes everything: in the evening the lagoon empties of visitors and the light is beautiful. Hotels range from small guesthouses to large luxury hotels: book in high season.

Oysters: what to know

Oualidia is known as Morocco's oyster capital. The easiest way is to eat at one of the restaurants on the lagoon, where the oysters come from the nearby beds. Do not expect to find them everywhere all year: ask about availability and the price per dozen before you sit down, as we have no reliable price to give you. The same tables also serve grilled fish and shrimp.

The boat trip among the oyster beds

Motor boats take visitors across the lagoon, past the oyster beds, and sometimes to sandbanks where you can see birds (flamingos, waders, egrets, depending on the season). The price and duration are negotiated at the landing stage: ask before boarding, and check whether the price is per boat or per person.

Beach, kayak and swimming

The lagoon beach is sheltered and suits children well. The ocean, on the other side of the rocky ridge, is rougher and colder. The water stays cool even in summer, and the wind can rise in the afternoon: bring a windbreaker.

When to go

Spring and autumn are pleasant; summer attracts many people, especially at weekends and during Moroccan holidays. In winter the weather can be rainy and windy, and some restaurants or hotels close: check before leaving.

Combining with other trips

Oualidia lies between Safi, known for its ceramics, and El Jadida. Travellers with more time combine it with Safi or do a two-day coastal trip with Essaouira. To compare with other trips from the region, see our day trips from Marrakech and the article Ouzoud, Ourika or Essaouira.

Practical tips

  • Fill up the tank and take cash: small restaurants and boats do not always take cards. See money and tipping in Marrakech.
  • Avoid driving at night on minor roads: animals, carts and pedestrians.
  • For oysters, choose a busy place and eat them the same day, very fresh.
  • Opening hours, prices and availability change: confirm on the spot or with your hotel.
