The short answer
- You want a big natural sight and water: the Ouzoud waterfalls, but plan a long day.
- You want mountains close to Marrakech: the Ourika valley and Setti Fatma, the easiest outing.
- You want a town, the sea and a different atmosphere: Essaouira, ideally with a night there.

The Ouzoud waterfalls: the spectacle, but a long road

About 150 km north-east of Marrakech, the Ouzoud waterfalls drop around 110 metres into a red gorge, with mills, olive trees and macaques. Paths lead down to the pool and boats go close to the foot of the falls for about twenty dirhams. Allow 2 h 30 to 3 h on the road each way: on an organised tour you will have about three hours on site. The flow is most spectacular in spring; in late summer it can be much reduced. Group tours leave from hotels and cost less than a private driver, but they impose a fixed programme and commercial stops.
The Ourika: the simplest, the closest

The Ourika valley is about 1 h 30 from Marrakech. The road follows a wadi lined with orchards as far as Setti Fatma, where a path climbs to stepped waterfalls. It is the easiest outing to organise, including by shared grand taxi (usually 30 to 50 DH a seat) or group tour (200 to 400 DH per person). The downside: the valley is very busy at weekends and in summer, and the restaurants by the water push you to spend. Choose a weekday, avoid settling in the wadi bed if a storm threatens, and wear good shoes.
Essaouira: a different atmosphere, but a big day

Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast, is about 3 hours from Marrakech by Supratours or CTM bus. Its fortified medina, fishing harbour, ramparts and beach are worth the trip, but the day is short: three hours of road each way leave only a few hours on site. The breeze is cool and often strong, even in summer, which also makes it an escape from Marrakech's heat. If you can, spend a night there.
How to choose for your trip
- With young children: the Ourika, shorter and easier; see also our family excursions from Marrakech.
- For photography and nature: Ouzoud in spring.
- For calm and the sea: Essaouira.
- Short on time: the Ourika is the only one of the three that leaves a real half-day on top of the journey.
- In summer: Essaouira or the Ourika, cooler than Marrakech; Ouzoud is hotter, but the water brings freshness.
How to organise it
All three trips can be booked through an agency, your accommodation or a private driver; Essaouira is easy by scheduled bus, and the Ourika by grand taxi. Check what an excursion includes (lunch, entrance fees, guide) and agree any price before leaving.
