These maxima are rounded climate benchmarks published for Merzouga by Weather & Climate, not a forecast or temperatures valid for the entire Sahara. The same source gives approximately 6 °C for the average minimum of January and 29 °C for that of July. Agafay and Zagora have their own conditions; check the weather forecast for your exact location before departure.

January and February: choose the night as much as the landscape

Winter may be suitable if you like walking when the heat is less. The point to check is not just the afternoon temperature, but the bedding, blankets, bathroom and sheltered spaces. Have heating specified if it is necessary for your comfort. “Luxury tent” does not prove that it will work during your stay.

The journey from Marrakech also crosses a mountain whose weather differs from that of the camp. Leave some flexibility in your itinerary and ask for postponement conditions if the road becomes impassable. For a short overnight trip, Agafay camps avoid a long crossing, but do not cancel out the evening cold. Take warm clothes even for a simple outing at sunset.

March and April: a good period, with no guarantee of calm

Spring is recommended by the Moroccan National Tourism Office to discover the Sahara. Temperatures gradually rise, which allows you to choose between walking and resting at camp. Book based on your heat tolerance, not just a “best season” deal for everyone. Public holidays and traveler vacations may also impact availability.

Sandstorms do not follow a reliable monthly timetable. We have not confirmed a local numerical probability allowing us to promise a month without wind. Instead, ask how the operator adjusts outings, protects luggage and reaches camp. Flexible booking is helpful when you have multiple nights in the area.

May and June: the heat changes the rhythm

Long activities in the middle of the day become less appealing as summer approaches. Ask where you can rest in the shade and what facilities actually exist in the tent or reception building. A swimming pool is not an answer to all the hot hours; an isolated camp may require a different organization than a hotel in a city.

If you go despite the heat, look for an outing limited to the cooler hours and a program that accepts adaptations. Don't take a long camel ride just because it's included. An evening at Agafay shortens the journey from Marrakech, but remains an exposed outing: the nearby desert is no guarantee of freshness.

July and August: favor comfort or change destination

Benchmarks from Merzouga show very high summer temperatures. For a first trip with flexible dates, we prefer to move the trip rather than increase the constraints. If your dates are fixed, clarify the reception conditions, transfers and rest solutions before paying. A mentioned air conditioning must be confirmed for your specific accommodation.

A trip to the coast may better correspond to a desire for the outdoors in summer. The main thing is to choose for the entire experience, including the night. Don't replace a multi-day tour with a shorter outing assuming that heat exposure will be inconsequential; compare hours spent outside and actual conditions.

September to December: from the return of mildness to cold nights

September can remain very hot. October is a frequent compromise, November brings more importance to warm layers, then December requires winter preparation. Autumn is also recommended by the Tourist Office, but a seasonal recommendation does not replace the weather. Choose a date with a little flexibility if the camp is the heart of the trip.

For Zagora, consider the luxury overnight camp tour or the safari with standard and luxury options depending on your desired comfort. The prices of the different options have not been compared on the same dates: check the total. For large dunes, comparison Merzouga presents suitable reservations; the guide Agafay, Zagora or Merzouga helps to choose the destination.

Ramadan, Eid and holidays: check the year of your trip

The religious calendar changes from year to year and its local confirmation may depend on lunar observation. We therefore do not give supposedly definitive dates. Ask for meal times, departure times and visits during your stay; also read travel during Ramadan. For holidays, confirm the availability of the driver and the camp, as well as the cancellation conditions and any compulsory meals.
