Camp or dinner show: don't mix them up
If you only want the evening, look at our comparison of Agafay dinner shows instead: back around 10 pm, cheaper, same atmosphere. Sleeping on site costs more but spares you the late drive back, lets you see the stars and the sunrise over the hills, and goes well with a slow morning before returning. The place itself is described on the Agafay desert page.
What you are really buying
All camp packages follow the same pattern: pickup in town around 4 pm, an hour by minibus, settling in, tea, sunset, Moroccan dinner with music and fire, a night in a tent, breakfast and a return between 10 am and noon. The differences lie in the type of tent (dormitory or private tent), the bathroom (shared or en suite), the pool, the number of travelers in the camp and the pickup.
The five offers in detail
Camp, camel ride and dinner (from $53). This offer lasts about 18 hours and includes a camel ride, dinner, fire show, overnight stay and breakfast. Rated 4.7 from 143 reviews: a small but good sample. It is the cheapest, hence the most basic (the tent is often shared): check the sleeping arrangement on the listing.
Retreat with pool (from $63). It is the best rated (4.8, about 6,800 reviews) with a return planned around 10:30 am. Unmarried couples where one partner is Moroccan or Muslim cannot share a tent or the dormitory: it is written on the listing, so read it if this applies to you.
Overnight with dinner, show and pool ($85). This package offers a private tent with bathroom, a four-course dinner and hotel pickup. Rated 4.1 from about 3,500 reviews; reviews mostly criticize the minibus and punctuality.
2-day bivouac ($286). This offer is rated 4.3 from 23 reviews. One traveler regrets the lack of information on the time of the camel ride and the return: ask by message the day before.
Inara luxury camp ($270). This night in an air-conditioned tent (4.7) requires getting there on your own: plan a taxi or a rental car. All the offers in the area are gathered in the Marrakech: Agafay Desert Retreat, Tent, Dinner, Show & Pool.
Season, cold and conditions
In the desert, winter nights are cold: guides report 3 to 10 °C and poorly insulated tents from November to February. Spring is described as the most comfortable season; in summer, the pool is a real asset. Some offers are not open to children under 12: read the conditions of each listing. On the $63 listing, unmarried couples where one partner is Moroccan or Muslim cannot share a tent.
Pitfalls
- Shared tent: a dormitory can hold up to 20 people with shared bathrooms; pay for the private tent if sleep matters.
- Times: confirm the pickup time and the return time the day before (from 10 am to noon depending on the offer).
- Extras: quad, scarf, drinks and tips are often paid on site.
- Atmosphere: a camp organized for groups, with music and photos; for silence, choose a high-end camp.
- Camel: a short ride, not an attraction in itself.
- Landscape: stony hills and the Atlas in the distance. For sand, see the comparison desert from Marrakech.
Which offer to choose?
- Tight budget: the $53 camp, checking the tent.
- First night: the retreat with pool at $63, the best rated.
- Couple: private tent with bathroom at $85, or the Inara luxury camp if the budget allows.
- Group: the 2-day bivouac, to arrange with the provider.
- Family: an offer that accepts children and has a pool, in spring or summer.
