Before going out: three precautions

  • Note the address and name of your riad, and save its location on your phone. Many riads are in dead ends (derbs) that do not show well on maps.
  • Tell the riad your return time: someone can meet you at the nearest meeting point (a medina gate or a taxi stop).
  • Charge your phone and keep cash in small notes. See eSIM and SIM card in Morocco.

Walking back into the medina

The main avenues and Jemaa el-Fna stay lively in the evening; the derbs are empty, poorly lit and have no landmarks. Our safety guide says it: avoid walking the alleys alone late. If you walk:

  • stay on main, lit streets;
  • do not accept help from a stranger offering to "guide" you; ask a shopkeeper or the riad instead;
  • keep your bag in front of you, phone and wallet in a closed pocket;
  • walk calmly, without pulling out a map or phone at every crossroads.

Taking a petit taxi at night

The beige petit taxis are the safest way home. The meter is compulsory, and at night a legal surcharge of 50% applies to the meter price; it is the only supplement allowed (see getting around Marrakech).

  • Say "le compteur, s'il vous plaît" before getting in. If the driver refuses, let them go and stop the next one.
  • Taxis stop at the medina gates (for example near Jemaa el-Fna or the Koutoubia): plan the last stretch on foot, or ask the riad to come and fetch you.
  • Prefer a taxi waiting on a busy street or outside a hotel to a vehicle that approaches you.
  • Note the taxi's number or photograph it; do not exceed 3 passengers.

Ride-hailing apps

Ride-hailing apps give a tracked trip and a displayed price; the service is closely watched and varies: check on the spot what works. Choose a pick-up point on a wide street, not inside the medina.

Guéliz and Hivernage: simpler

In the new town, streets are wide, lit and full of taxis. After a bar or club, do not walk home alone; have a taxi called by the bar, restaurant or hotel. See Marrakech at night for addresses and Guéliz and Hivernage.

If someone bothers you

Snatch thefts happen, especially at night. If someone follows you, enter an open shop or restaurant, or head for a busy street. In case of trouble, contact the tourist police or your riad. See scams to avoid.

Solo travellers

A woman travelling alone should avoid empty alleys late at night even more; see travelling alone in Marrakech.
