A celebration found mostly in hotels and restaurants
Valentine's Day is not a traditional Moroccan holiday, but it is well established in hotels, restaurants and among young city-dwellers. You will notice it mainly in palaces, charming riads and restaurants in Guéliz and Hivernage, which offer dedicated menus and evenings. In the souks, it is an ordinary day.
Evening ideas
Dinner in a palace or grand hotel
Big hotels publish their February programme a few weeks ahead. For example, in 2026 the Royal Mansour offered a Moroccan dinner at 1,250 MAD per person, with an aperitif, a tangia cooking workshop and live music, plus menus in its restaurants. These prices and formulas change every year: ask the hotel for the 2027 programme, and check whether drinks and service are included. See also La Mamounia for its festive programme.
Dinner on a medina rooftop
Terraces facing the Koutoubia are ideal at sunset, but very popular that night. Our guide to panoramic terraces lists those with a view; book a table near the edge rather than relying on first come, first served. Bring a warm layer: evenings cool quickly in February.
Hammam, massage or spa for two
A hammam ritual and a couple's massage by day avoid the evening crowds. The choice between a traditional hammam and a hotel spa is explained in the Marrakech hammam guide.
An evening in the Agafay desert
About 40 km away, the Agafay desert offers dinners in tents, campfires and nights in luxury camps. Check the return transfer, the return time and tent heating in February.
A daytime stroll
Gardens are calmer than restaurants: the Jardin Majorelle, the Jardin Secret or the Menara gardens. More ideas are in romantic Marrakech.
Booking: what to check
- Book early: for 14 February, allow several weeks for a well-known table, and January for a riad.
- Fixed menu: many places serve only a set menu that evening. Ask the price per person, what is included (drinks, service) and the cancellation terms before paying a deposit.
- Alcohol: it is served only in licensed places; many riads do not serve it. Ask before booking.
- Written confirmation: ask for it by message or email, with the time and number of covers.
Valentine's Day pitfalls
- The inflated "special menu" in an average restaurant: compare with the usual menu.
- Touts in Jemaa el-Fna and the alleys who steer you to a "romantic" restaurant: they earn a commission, which you pay in the bill. See scams to avoid.
- Flowers and gifts sold at tourist prices: ask the price before accepting.
- "Romantic" horse-drawn carriages with no price agreed in advance: negotiate the fare before getting in.
Rules and precautions for couples
In Morocco, sex outside marriage is punishable by law. In practice, hotels and riads that host foreign tourists generally do not ask foreign couples for a marriage certificate, but some are stricter, especially with a Moroccan–foreign couple. Strong public displays of affection are frowned upon: be discreet. Details are in our guide Can you… in Marrakech? and in etiquette in Marrakech.
