In the south-east of Marrakech, at the entrance to the Al Maaden estate, MACAAL (Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden) showcases modern and contemporary art from Morocco and the rest of Africa. It is run by the Fondation Alliances and built around the Lazraq family collection, which holds more than 2,000 works: painting, photography, sculpture, textiles, installation and video. Opened in November 2016, during the United Nations climate conference held in Marrakech, the museum closed after the Al Haouz earthquake of September 2023 and reopened in February 2025. Far from the crowds of the medina, it is a calm place to visit.
Highlights

The permanent collection
Renovated since the reopening, the "Seven Contours, One Collection" display organizes the collection around broad themes such as decolonizing, cohabiting, transcribing or connecting. It brings together Moroccan artists and artists from across the continent, from pioneers of modern art to today's creators. The tall rooms, lit through latticed screens, give the works room to breathe.
Temporary exhibitions
The museum changes its displays regularly. Until 29 November 2026, "In the Blink of an Eye" is devoted to the Moroccan photographer and filmmaker Daoud Aoulad-Syad. Until 8 January 2027, "Statues Also Breathe" and Yassine Balbzioui's installation "Crazy Lines" complete the visit.
The Al Maaden sculpture park
The museum stands next to the Al Maaden golf course, owned by the same family, which has hosted a sculpture park since 2013. It extends the dialogue between contemporary art and landscape begun by the collection.
