The usual 3-day route

According to the booking listings, day one crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass and stops at Ait Ben Haddou. Day two follows the Draa Valley, with a stop at Tamegroute (Quranic library) on some tours, as far as M'Hamid, then the track to the erg and a night in camp, sometimes with a camel ride. Day three is the return, by the same road or, on a private offer, via Lake Iriqui and Foum Zguid. One traveller notes that you only really enter the desert on day two: if you want time there, look at a 4-day plan.

Selected offers

Always compare: the camp type (standard or luxury tent, private bathroom), meals, the vehicle (4x4 or minibus as far as M'Hamid), extras (camel, quad) and group size.

Chigaga or Merzouga?

Merzouga offers tall dunes (up to 150 m for Erg Chebbi) and many camps, but more people. Chigaga is farther from the end of the road and from services: bring water, a power bank and expect little signal. To compare, read Zagora or Merzouga, Merzouga desert from Marrakech and Zagora in 2 days.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; in summer the heat often exceeds 45 C in the south, in winter the nights are cold. See when to go to the desert.

Practical tips

  • Bring warm clothes for the night and a scarf against sand.
  • Get the camp name and bathroom facilities confirmed in writing.
  • For a night close to Marrakech, prefer Agafay.
  • For the road and Ait Ben Haddou: the Ait Ben Haddou page and Zagora from Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for Erg Chigaga? At least 3 days and 2 nights from Marrakech; 4 days give more time in the desert.

Do I need a 4x4? Yes for the roughly 60 km track between M'Hamid and the erg, on these tours.

Is Chigaga nicer than Merzouga? It is more remote, not necessarily "better": it depends on what you want (quiet or big dunes).

Are prices fixed? No: listings range from about 400 to over 2,000 USD per person; check on your booking date.
