The medina: the simplest choice
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Essaouira medina is small, flat and ringed by ramparts: you can walk to the harbour, the Skala, Moulay Hassan square and the beach. Riads occupy old houses built around a courtyard, often with a roof terrace where breakfast is a pleasure. It is the best choice for a first visit of two to three nights.
Worth knowing: the lanes are narrow and sound carries, notably the call to prayer and the seagulls at dawn. Check in the reviews whether the room faces the street or the courtyard, and ask the riad how to reach it from the nearest gate: most will send someone to collect your luggage. Street names are not always legible, so an address given from a medina gate saves you from getting lost.
Hotel pick: Riad Babette (Booking score 9.6, read 30 October 2026): in the medina. Limit: the last stretch from the taxi drop-off is on foot through narrow alleys, so travel light.
The beachfront: pool and fresh air
Essaouira's bay is long and open, and the wind is its trademark: excellent for kitesurfing and windsurfing, less so for lying out without a sweater. Beachfront hotels usually have a pool and are roomier than riads, but they are fifteen to twenty minutes' walk from the medina (confirm on each hotel's map). It is a good choice for families, or if you come for wind sports. The Atlantic stays cool even in summer: do not count on warm swimming.
Hotel pick: Le Palazzo (Booking score 9.2, read 30 October 2026): family rooms; spa; about 3 minutes' walk from the beach. Limit: the beach is close, but the wind blows constantly for much of the year.
Hotel pick: Villa Quieta (Booking score 9.1, read 30 October 2026): outdoor pool; beach across the street; free parking. Limit: it sits away from Place Moulay Hassan (check the map), so plan a taxi or other transport for outings.
Outside the walls: quieter, often cheaper
Beyond the gates, the modern part of Essaouira has simple hotels and apartments, with easy access to parking and the bus station. It is the area to choose if you arrive by car or want a low price; in return you lose the medina atmosphere and have to walk or take a petit taxi to dinner. The Supratours bus arrives outside the walls: see bus or transfer between Marrakech and Essaouira.
Diabat and Sidi Kaouki: nature next door

South of town, Diabat and the Sidi Kaouki road line up guesthouses, eco-lodges and dunes facing the ocean. You need a car or taxi for everything (the medina is a few kilometres away), but the calm is real, and horse and quad rides start from here. For those activities, read our guide to quad, horse and camel in Essaouira.
Which area for your trip?
- First visit, 2 to 3 nights: the medina, in a riad.
- Family, pool and beach: the beachfront.
- Small budget or arriving by car: outside the walls.
- Wind sports: the beachfront, near the kite schools.
- Peace and nature: Diabat and Sidi Kaouki.
- Just one night from Marrakech: the medina, to see the harbour at sunset and stroll in the morning before the groups arrive.
Tips for booking well
- Wind matters: in spring and summer alike the beach is very windy; a sea-facing room is not always the nicest, and a riad in the medina is more sheltered.
- Luggage: cars are banned from the medina, with car parks around the ramparts; check parking before booking if you come by car.
- Heating: winter nights are cool and damp; check the riad's listing for heating, and for air conditioning in summer.
- Terraces: read the reviews on noise and room condition, as quality varies a lot from one riad to another.
- Tourist tax: it is charged per person per night and is not always included in the displayed price; read the booking conditions. We could not confirm the rate, so do not count on a precise amount.
- Free cancellation: prefer it if your dates depend on a transfer or an excursion.
- Book through the platform: do not pay by bank transfer to a stranger who contacts you outside the site.
And for your days?
From Essaouira, outings are best booked ahead: see wind sports and activities, quad, horse or camel and the on-the-spot itinerary. To sleep in Marrakech before or after, see where to stay in Marrakech; if you are torn between two coastal towns, Essaouira or Agadir.
