Essaouira and Agadir at a glance

The wind: the real deciding factor

Essaouira is known for its wind, the Atlantic trade winds, which often blow hardest in the afternoon, especially in summer. They attract kitesurfers and windsurfers (see Essaouira: kitesurfing and activities); they can also ruin an afternoon of sunbathing. Bring a jacket even in summer. Agadir, in a more sheltered bay, is a better place to lay out a towel. Check the wind forecast before choosing your day.

The medina: Essaouira's strength

Essaouira's walled medina can be explored on foot in a few hours: white and blue lanes, thuya-wood marquetry workshops, galleries, the fishing port and the Skala. Agadir has no old medina: the city was destroyed by the 1960 earthquake, and the only relic is the ruined Oufella kasbah overlooking the bay. If you want old architecture and strolling, the answer is Essaouira. For the visit itself, read Essaouira from Marrakech.

The beach and swimming: Agadir's strength

Agadir has a wide sandy beach stretching several kilometres, a promenade, cafés and the marina. Choose it for a beach day, for children who want to swim or for winter sun. Check the flags before swimming: the Atlantic remains powerful. See Agadir: the complete guide and Agadir from Marrakech.

How much time to allow

  • One day from Marrakech: Essaouira, no hesitation. Allow about 11 to 12 hours door to door with an organised tour.
  • One night: either one. Essaouira for sunset on the ramparts, Agadir for the seafront and the El Had souk the next day.
  • Two to three nights: Agadir if you want beach time; Essaouira if you want to walk, eat fish and take your time. You can combine both: allow about 2.5 to 3 hours by road between them.

Where to stay

In Essaouira you mostly sleep in the medina, in a riad or guesthouse: search Booking for Essaouira, Morocco, then read where to stay in Essaouira to choose between the medina, the beach and outside the walls. In Agadir, the seafront suits a first visit and Founty and Sonaba suit families: see Agadir hotels and where to stay in Agadir. Prices vary widely with the season, so we do not quote them.

Activities to book

In Essaouira, the most booked listing is the small-group coastal day trip with lunch from Marrakech: 4.9 out of 13,424 reviews, from €16, about 11.5 hours, private option available. For a day at your own pace, the private day trip by Camel Safaris starts at around $120 per person (4.6 out of 55 reviews), with a dedicated driver. In Agadir, the best-selling activity we found is the Agadir/Taghazout desert and beach quad safari: 4.8 out of 3,956 reviews, about 4 hours (the displayed price is calculated for two people sharing one quad). See also quad and buggy in Agadir. We did not find a reliable Marrakech-Agadir day tour on the platform: for Agadir, take the bus or a transfer. Prices observed in October 2026.
