What to see in Essaouira

  • The medina: UNESCO-listed, laid out on a grid, with streets calmer and easier to read than those of Marrakech. Allow half a day of wandering through souks, thuya-wood workshops and galleries.
  • The Skala de la Ville: the sea-facing rampart with its cannons, which gives the best-known view of the town. It is the best spot for sunset.
  • The harbour and the Skala du Port: the blue fishing boats, the fish auction and the bastion above the port. Entry to the bastion is paid, around 30 to 60 dirhams according to several guides; confirm at the gate. To eat at the harbour, see our guide to the harbour and fish restaurants of Essaouira.
  • The beach: a wide, windswept bay of sand. You walk on it more than you swim from it, as the water is cool all year. For wind sports, see kitesurfing and water activities in Essaouira.

One day in Essaouira: hour by hour

This itinerary assumes arriving around 9:30 am (or a night on the spot the day before).

  1. 9:30 am: enter through the medina gate, coffee and breakfast on a quiet street before the crowds.
  2. 10:30 am: walk the medina, souks, thuya workshops, Skala street.
  3. 12:30 pm: grilled fish lunch at the harbour.
  4. 2:30 pm: Skala du Port, then the boats and the quay.
  5. 4 pm: beach, or tea on a terrace.
  6. 5:30 pm: Skala de la Ville for the evening light.
  7. Departure or dinner: if you head back to Marrakech, allow about 2 h 30 to 3 h on the road (see below).

Day two: beach, activity, quiet quarters

Street and city gate in Essaouira

  • Morning: a walk on the beach, or a kitesurf or surf lesson if the wind is up.
  • Midday: lunch at a medina address, away from the harbour if you ate fish there the day before.
  • Afternoon: quad, horse or camel towards the dunes (see quad, horse or camel in Essaouira), or a trip to Sidi Kaouki.
  • Evening: dinner and a last sunset from the rampart; if you leave in the evening, plan to set off before dark.

Guided tours and activities to book on the spot

To understand the medina and avoid wandering the souks, a guided tour of the town helps. The activities offered in Essaouira (walking tours, quad, horse, camel, cooking classes) can be compared on the Essaouira: Sqala du Port, Medina Ramparts & Fish Market Tour. We could not note precise prices or ratings for each offer at the time of writing: compare them on screen (rating, number of reviews, free cancellation) and prefer highly rated listings with many reviews. For a full day with a driver, the private day trip was seen at about $74 (few reviews, see our comparison).

Stay overnight or go back in the evening?

A night changes the visit: the town is more pleasant once the coaches leave, and the sunset from the rampart is worth it. To choose a district, see where to stay in Essaouira. If you are torn with another coastal city, read Essaouira or Agadir.

Getting there from Marrakech

About 2 h 30 to 3 h by road. Bus, private transfer or car: see Marrakech–Essaouira, bus or transfer.

Practical tips

  • Wind and cool air: bring a jacket, even in summer.
  • Walking: the medina is done entirely on foot, wear flat shoes.
  • Money: carry cash for small purchases and coffees.
  • Season: spring and autumn are the most pleasant.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough to see Essaouira? Yes for the medina, the ramparts and the harbour, but the schedule is tight. Two days leave time for the beach and an activity.

Do you need a guide in the medina? No, the medina is easy to explore, but a guided tour helps with the history and the workshops.

When is the sunset? From the Skala de la Ville, at the end of the day; arrive a little before sunset.

Can you swim? Yes, but the water is cool and the wind often strong: the beach is mostly for walking and wind sports.
