Medina or estate?
In town. La Mamounia is Marrakech's most famous palace hotel, on Avenue Bab Jdid along the ramparts: it is a stop on the sightseeing bus and you can see its surroundings on foot (see the La Mamounia page). The Royal Mansour is in the medina, about five minutes' walk from Jemaa el-Fna according to Booking: its rooms are stand-alone riads (Premier, Superior, Privilege, Prestige). Reviews mention many stairs and sometimes slow service at busy times. In Hivernage, the Four Seasons Resort Marrakech has two pools, three restaurants and a spa; the Es Saadi Marrakech Resort - Palace sits in an eight-hectare park a few minutes' walk from the old city. Careful: Booking also lists an "Es Saadi Marrakech Resort - Hotel", a more modest property separate from the Palace; check the exact name.

On an estate. The Selman Marrakech, about ten minutes' drive from the centre, is known for its Arabian horses; it has three outdoor pools, three restaurants and a kids club. The Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech, about ten minutes from Jemaa el-Fna, covers twenty hectares: guests mostly book the pool villas, and report costly meals. The Palais Namaskar, on Route de Bab Atlas, offers suites, pool villas and a spa; several reviews find it far from the centre, so plan for taxis.
Which palace for which stay?
- First visit, mostly on foot: La Mamounia or Royal Mansour.
- Pool, calm and children: Selman (kids club) or Four Seasons.
- Honeymoon with a private pool: the villas at Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons or Palais Namaskar; see also luxury riads.
- Slightly gentler top-end budget: Es Saadi Palace or Palais Namaskar have the lowest "from" rates in this comparison.
Questions to ask before booking
- Does the room category include the private pool, breakfast and airport transfer?
- Are the spa and hammam included or extra? At some properties, access to the spa pools is charged separately.
- How long does it take to reach the medina, and at what taxi cost? A remote estate adds transport costs.
- Fine dining and alcohol are expensive in palace hotels: check the menu prices. See also the alcohol rules.
- Sensitive dates: New Year, Easter and summer vary a lot; compare the same nights several weeks ahead.
Without staying at a palace
