Luxury riad or palace: the real choice

White lounge under drapes on a riad terrace

A boutique riad in the heart of the medina offers a patio, a terrace and a few rooms; a palace offers gardens, a spa and round-the-clock service. For privacy, the Royal Mansour is the closest to a private riad: every unit is an independent riad on several levels. La Mamounia, built from 1923, suits those who want the historic setting and tea in the gardens: see our page on La Mamounia. To compare the two formats simply, read riad or hotel in Marrakech.

Which area for a couple?

  • West medina, near Bab Jdid: walking distance from the ramparts and part of the medina; a taxi for the rest.
  • Palmeraie: gardens and silence, but the medina is a taxi ride away.
  • Central medina: smaller riads, within walking distance of Jemaa el-Fna, but with street noise and carried luggage.

Areas are detailed in where to stay in Marrakech.

How to book well

  • Dates. Prices rise at Christmas, New Year and Easter: book early. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons (see best time to visit).
  • Exact room. One property offers everything from a standard double to a suite with a private pool: compare the same category.
  • Total stay. Add taxes, breakfast, transfer and meals, which weigh heavily in a palace.
  • Arrival. Have the meeting point confirmed by the property, especially at a riad: see from the airport to the centre.
  • Alcohol. Easier to find in palaces and large hotels (see alcohol in Marrakech).

Honeymoon ideas
