Taroudant is a walled town in the Souss plain, about 225 km south-west of Marrakech and 80 km east of Agadir. It is nicknamed "little Marrakech" for its ochre ramparts, nearly 7 km long, its calmer souks and its Assarag square lined with cafés. Less touristy than its big sister, it can be explored on foot in a few hours. The round trip from Marrakech makes a long day: if you have time, stay a night instead, or combine it with Essaouira or the excursions from Marrakech.
Highlights

The ramparts
Five main gates pierce the walls, including Bab El Kasbah and Bab Taghrount. A horse-drawn carriage ride lets you go all the way round at a leisurely pace. A restoration programme was launched after the 2023 Al Haouz earthquake.

The souks
A Berber souk and an Arab souk share the centre around Assarag square: silver jewellery, spices, pottery and leather. The mood is calmer than in Marrakech and haggling is less insistent.

The town from above
The medina rooftops, the palm trees and, in the distance, the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas ranges explain the appeal. At sunset the walls turn a vivid pink.

Tips
Leave early: the road is long and the centre is quickly covered. The ramparts and medina are free to enter; agree the price of a carriage ride before climbing in, and the souks are best in the morning. Fill up the car before leaving. Prices for organised tours and drivers vary a lot: ask what is included (lunch, entrance fees, stops) before booking.
How to get there
About 225 km from Marrakech, or 3.5 to 4 hours by road depending on traffic and route. The simplest option is a car with driver or a rental; scheduled buses also link Marrakech to Taroudant, sometimes with a change at Agadir. Check times and fares at the bus station, as they change.
