What is a private driver for?

In the medina a car is useless: the lanes are closed to cars and you walk (see petit taxi, bus or calèche). A driver by the day is for outings: the Ourika Valley, the Ouzoud waterfalls, the Agafay desert, Essaouira. You set the pace, stop where you like, and the vehicle waits for you.

Driver, rental car or organised tour?

  • Private driver: one price for 7 people, no driving on Atlas roads, a route of your choice. The most expensive for two.
  • Rental car: cheaper per day, but you drive, pay the deposit and find parking; see renting a car in Marrakech.
  • Organised tour: the cheapest per person, but with fixed times and stops; see excursions from Marrakech.
  • Airport: for a single transfer, compare the airport transfer.

Pitfalls

  • Real duration: 8 hours include the drive. For Essaouira or Ouzoud (about 2 h 30 to 3 h each way), the day is long; ask about the maximum distance before paying.
  • Trips out of town: some listings limit the area or charge extra; read "included" and "not included".

  • Variable prices: the same operator shows different amounts depending on the page and date; confirm on screen.

Which option to choose?

  • A day for a group of 4 to 7: the full-day van.
  • Couple or solo, city only: a taxi or the half day.
  • Long outing for two: an organised tour will be cheaper.
