Day train: Marrakech, Casablanca, Tangier
You leave from Marrakech station. The first leg, to Casa-Voyageurs, takes about 2 h 40; other guide figures, such as fares to Casablanca, are in train and bus from Marrakech. At Casa-Voyageurs you board Al Boraq, which links Casablanca and Tangier in about two hours. Before booking, check the connection time: if it is short, a delay on the first train makes you miss the second; if it is long, you lose time. Buy both legs on the ONCF website or app, or at the ticket desk. Al Boraq tickets are sold by departure time: book early in high season and during holidays.
In Tangier, Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves make an easy half-day.
Night train: a night saved
A train with couchettes also links Marrakech and Tangier: evening departure, arrival the next morning. Check the days of operation and the type of couchette on the ONCF website. It is slower than the day option, but you do not pay for a hotel night. Keep your valuables on you.
The plane
Marrakech and Tangier each have an airport, but we have not confirmed a regular direct flight all year round: depending on the season you may have to go via Casablanca. Add the trips to the airport (see Marrakech-Menara airport to the centre) and the arrival in Tangier: the gain over the train is smaller than it looks. Compare prices and times on the airlines' websites on the day you book.
Private transfer
By road, Marrakech to Tangier is a very long day. A driver only makes sense for a group with a lot of luggage and with a break on the way, for example a night in Rabat. There is no official fare: ask for a written quote. For a more flexible driver, read private driver in Marrakech by the day.
And if Tangier is not the goal?
For Chefchaouen, a multi-day tour is sometimes simpler: Fez and Chefchaouen tour from Marrakech. For a stopover, see Casablanca from Marrakech or Fez with Marrakech to Fez.
Which option to choose?
- Daytime trip, comfort: train then Al Boraq, 1st class if possible.
- Saving time: the night train, if the date suits.
- In a hurry: the plane, after checking that a flight suits you.
- Group with luggage: private transfer in two stages.
Timetables and fares: confirm them on the ONCF website and on the airlines' websites.
