"From" prices seen in October 2026, per person. Gear rented on the spot (sleeping bag, poles, jackets): about 50 to 60 MAD per item, according to the listings.
Which length to choose?
- 1 day: transfer of about 1 h 30 to Imlil (1,740 m), a walk through the valley villages, lunch. No summit. For the place itself, read our page on Imlil and Toubkal.
- 2 days: day 1, about 5 to 6 hours of walking from Imlil to the refuge (3,207 m); day 2, a start before dawn for the summit, descent to Imlil, return to Marrakech. It is intense: you need to be fit.
- 3 days: one extra day to acclimatise, often with the Tizi Tamatert pass, and a gentler summit push. The two offers noted have few reviews (4 and 7): read them with caution.
What the offers include
The listings usually advertise: round-trip transfer from Marrakech, a local mountain guide, one night in a refuge dormitory, meals, and a mule for the luggage. Most exclude drinks at the refuge, rented gear and tips. Read the listing on screen: an offer at $136 and one at $169 do not always include the same things.
Safety, guide and season
- Compulsory guide: a licensed guide has been required for the ascent since 2018; checks take place after Aroumd, at Sidi Chamharouch and at the refuge. An offer that includes the guide is therefore the normal route, not a luxury.
- Best season: April to June and September to October. In winter snow covers the summit and crampons and an ice axe become necessary; check that the offer says so.
- Altitude: the refuge is at 3,207 m, the summit at 4,167 m. Headaches and tiredness are common; going down is the right reflex.
- Weather: summer can be hot below and cold above, with storms late in the day.
- Insurance: check that your travel insurance covers high-altitude hiking, and read our guide to health in Marrakech.
Book, or climb on your own?
Booking costs more than dealing directly with a guide in Imlil (expect 500 to 1,000 MAD a day for a guide, according to our page), but you get transfer, refuge and meals in one payment, with cancellation under the offer's terms. If you have a car, see our guide to renting a car in Marrakech and the page on Ouirgane and Asni along the road. For easier valleys, see the High Atlas from Marrakech and the Ourika Valley.
