How much time do you really have?
Start from take-off time and subtract, in order: about 2 h 30 at the airport before the flight (security, check-in, border police, longer in high season), 15 to 25 minutes by taxi, then a 30 to 45 minute margin to find a taxi and finish on foot from your riad. That gives the time you must leave the medina.
| Flight time | Leave the medina around | What is realistic |
|---|---|---|
| Before 9 am | The evening before or at dawn | Nothing: prepare the taxi and rest |
| Between 10 am and 1 pm | Between 6:30 and 9:30 am | Breakfast on a terrace, nothing else |
| Between 2 pm and 5 pm | Between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm | One 2 to 3 hour activity in the morning |
| After 6 pm | After 2:30 pm | A full morning, lunch, then leave |
Indicative calculation; tighten or widen it depending on your airline, terminal and the season. A night or very early departure is prepared the day before: see getting back safely at night and have your riad book the taxi.
Where to leave your bags
- Your riad or hotel: the simplest solution. After check-out, most places keep suitcases at reception; ask when booking and confirm the day before.
- Marrakech train station: coin-operated lockers are reported on the right as you exit, for small bags only (about 25 MAD per use according to a travel blog, to be checked on the spot). Not practical if your riad is in the medina.
- The airport: sources disagree on whether there is an official left-luggage service in the terminals and on its prices. Do not count on it without confirming at the information desk.
- Online storage: platforms offer partner shops as day-storage points. Handy in town, but read the conditions and the bag size accepted.
If you have to keep your suitcase with you anyway, choose a flat activity without stairs (a garden, a café, a hammam with lockers) rather than the souks, where narrow lanes and carts make a suitcase a pain.
Ideas by duration
2 to 3 hours: stay near the medina
- Breakfast, then the square: early in the morning, Jemaa el-Fna square is calm and the light is good for photos. See also the Moroccan breakfast guide.
- The souks with a guide: to shop without getting lost or haggling blind, a guided visit helps. One offer: the 3-hour colorful souks tour; check the duration, start time and cancellation terms on the listing. For purchases, read what to bring back from Marrakech and allow time to pack.
- A hammam: relaxation before a long flight. Offers are compared in our hammam guide; check that a locker is provided for your things.
3 to 4 hours: a real visit
- Ben Youssef Madrasa: the Ben Youssef Madrasa takes less than an hour; a guided visit of the madrasa and the secret garden turns it into a short circuit in the north of the medina.
- Bahia Palace: the Bahia Palace takes about an hour; compare it with El Badi in Bahia, El Badi or Dar Si Said.
- A garden: the Majorelle Garden needs a margin because of the queue; the Secret Garden is quieter. The Menara Gardens are on the airport side: a short stop is possible if you leave straight afterwards.
Book what can be booked the day before, with free cancellation, and keep a margin rather than chaining two visits.
Getting to the airport
Cars cannot enter the medina: allow 5 to 10 minutes on foot to the taxi, with a riad employee for the suitcases when possible. A transfer booked in advance saves looking for a taxi (comparison in airport transfer: which offer). Fares, bus 19 and apps are detailed in the Marrakech airport guide.
Before you go: the quick checklist
- Passport and boarding pass within reach, not at the bottom of the suitcase.
- Leftover dirhams: the dirham cannot always be exchanged outside Morocco; spend or change them in time (see money and tipping).
- Oils, flower waters and other liquids bought in the medina: in the hold, not in the cabin; check your airline's rules.
- Last meal: a quiet lunch in town rather than at the airport; see where to eat near Jemaa el-Fna.
If your flight is late in the evening
A flight after 8 pm leaves you a whole day. For a half-day à la carte, see Marrakech in half a day; for the whole day, the Marrakech in one day itinerary. If you hand back the room in the morning, a pool day pass gives you somewhere to leave your things and cool off before the night.
