Berber Ecomuseum in the Ourika Valley: Opening Hours, Ticket Price and Visit
In Tafza, a village of the Ourika Valley about 37 km from Marrakech, the Berber Ecomuseum occupies Talberj, a rammed-earth tower built in the 1910s–1920s by two brothers and restored with traditional materials. Opened in April 2009 on the initiative of Hamid Mergani and Patrick Manac'h, it is the first ecomuseum in Morocco. With a guide, you discover the daily life of the Amazigh people of the Atlas: jewellery, carpets, pottery, old photographs and documentary films. It is a short visit that fits easily on the way up the Ourika Valley.
Highlights

The tower and the Berber house
The building is the first piece of the collection: raw-earth walls, small rooms on several levels, doors and lintels carved with symbols. The guide explains how an Atlas house is organised, from the animal stable to the roof terrace, and what the engraved patterns mean.
Pottery, carpets and jewellery
Pottery is the largest collection, alongside carpets, tapestries and silver jewellery. Old photographs of mountain life and documentary films about Berber tribes complete the visit. Pottery workshops are organised with craftspeople from Tafza.

The valley around Tafza
The ecomuseum is also a starting point for walks to neighbouring villages, community gardens and potters' workshops. A coffee or a meal on the terrace can be booked in advance.

Tips
The entrance fee, guided visit included, is not shown on the museum's website and sources differ: about 20 dirhams on a partner card's page, 40 dirhams on a local website (seen in October 2026). Bring cash and ask the price on arrival. Allow 45 minutes to an hour on site. Visits are guided in French, English or Spanish; a meal on the terrace and a pottery workshop can be booked by phone (+212 5 24 38 57 21). Some taxi drivers say the place is closed so they can take you elsewhere; if in doubt, call before you go. Several travel guides report that the ecomuseum was affected by the September 2023 earthquake: no official reopening or closure could be confirmed at the date of this page, so a phone call before the trip is wise.
How to get there
Tafza is on the Ourika road, about 37 km from Marrakech, 45 minutes to 1 hour by road. By car, follow the Ourika signs from the ramparts, then the ecomuseum sign in the village; ask for "Douar Tafza" if needed. By taxi: shared grand taxi towards Ourika (get off at Tafza) or a private taxi for the day, combined with Setti Fatma.
